Twas the night before kick-off

‘Twas the night before Kickoff, when all through Jack Trice,
Not a creature was stirring, not even Todd Blythe.
The grass freshly trimmed and painted with care,
The grounds crew knowing Hicks would soon be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of a “sprinting” Curvey danced in their heads.
And mamma in her CF thong, and I in my ISU cap,
Had just messed up the sheets and laid for our long evening nap.

When from the living room there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Down the stairs I flew like a flash,
I fell over the tailgating box and gave myself a carpet rash.

There was my son, decked out in his ISU gear,
“Daddy, is it time for the Cyclones to start the new year”.
I smiled, “Not yet, my enthusiastic child,
We’ve got to wait until tomorrow until we go wild”.

“Now Meyer! Now McKinzie! Now Brant and Culbertson!
On Jackson, on Flynn, on Carper and Stephenson!
Quick Stevie, follow your line and get six!
That my son, is how the Cyclones will start kickoff two-thousand and six!"

CBS is dumb!!

CBS announced that for their new Survivor season this fall. They have decided to make groups of five and divide them by race. Whites vs. Blacks vs. Asian Americans vs. Hispanic Americans. This is the dumbest thing I have heard in years. Hello racism? Hello negative stereotypes? Apparently CBS has regressed to the 1950's with this piece of crap. I will never watch Survivor ever again.

3:16

I have decided that I need to start a new political party. The democrats and republicans have it all wrong and libertarians, although a cute idea, are unrealistic. I will call my new party 3:16. Yes, it will be a party based on Christian theology but unlike modern day republicanism, will actually preach what Jesus wrote about. 3:16 will be neither liberal or conservative. I don't remember ever reading in the bible that the only things that Jesus cared about was abortion, gay marriage, evolution, and ten commandments in the court room. In fact, I thought Jesus actually cared for our poor, our sick, and the neediest. But contrary to what liberals think, 3:16 does not believe we should just give all of our money. There must be some social responsibility. Although Jesus helped the poor, I don't ever remember Jesus giving them any money so they didn't have to work. However, I truly believe that Jesus would want affordable health care, education, and strong social programs designed to help lift our neediest out of poverty. 3:16 will also care about issues that republicans care about too. Our morals have disintegrated to disgusting levels. The amount of sex, profanity, and misogny is disgusting. The real threat to marriage is not homosexuals, it's divorce! 3:16 really feels that the destruction of the family unit has led to almost all of America's problems. There are about a million issues, but alas, Johnny's hungry.

Johnatopia

After reading Nimitopia's recent blog entry, I was reminded once again of what a beautiful innocent world we live in. I was reminded that we are not just Minnesotans, or Americans, but we are citizens of this world. How often I am guilty of thinking of ways that I can invest better in stocks and not how I can invest better in being a better brother, boyfriend, son, and friend. I think it takes being completely out of your element to really examine it. A trip to Africa, Cuba, or even camping a few hours away I think would do the trick. After all, I can't tell you who discovered water, but it sure as hell wasn't a fish. I think soon, I need to go on a short vacation to examine my priorities. A spiritual retreat where I can unselfishly focus on my needs.

College Week: part 1

In the next three weeks, I will be seeing a lot of colleges. The past two days I have spent in three different colleges: Winona State, St. Mary's (a little Catholic school also in Winona, MN) and University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. I was absolutely blown away by how pretty southeastern Minnesota/Western Wisconsin are. Bordering the Mississippi River, there are giant hill/mountains and beautiful bluffs. It is a gorgeous area of the country I never had the privelege of ever seeing before. I spent all day today in La Crosse with university people and La Crosse Tribune people. The city of La Crosse reminded me a lot of Lincoln, Nebraska. As a college town, I bet it is awesome. There was plenty of fun stuff to do. Ames could learn a thing or two. The campus of UWL was pretty boring but the town and the view of the bluffs made up for it. It was a great trip.
